Breaking News, Elementary

Author Tyne Brown recently visited Ms. Mason’s grade three class at LFAS.  The author is getting ready to publish her first book Driftwood Dragons, which is a compilation of sea side poems for children. Tyne Brown’s writing can be seen numerous times in children’s magazines such as Babybug as well as other literary journals. She has been writing and collecting her poems for many years, often writing in her cottage on the Atlantic in the Maritimes. She never considered publishing them until one day  when she looked over her work,  she discovered an ocean theme. That is how Brown’s compilation of 35 ocean poems came to be.

During her visit with Ms. Mason’s grade three class, the students showed Brown samples of their own writing, sharing poems and limericks; the kids enjoyed meeting her.

Brown draws inspiration for her writing from authors such as Laura Salice, Shel Silverstein, Dr. Seuss and Beatrix Potter;  she is a strong advocate of children’s literacy, believing that reading is a big part of writing poetry.

This is Brown’s first book, and I’m sure this is not the last we are going to hear of her.  She just moved to British Columbia from the Maritimes. “I feel right at home. There are so many similarities between the east coast and the west,” she said.
